Downtown is steeped in the history and development of Cape Girardeau. As the city grew in the early 20th Century, downtown was established as the economic center of the local community and region. In the mid 1920s the intersection of Broadway and Fountain Streets became a picture of commercial success with the old Federal Building, Hotel Idan-Ha, Himmelberger-Harrison Building and Hotel Marquette.
Like many communities, the 1960s and 70s brought about commercial relocation to areas near major highways and large downtown buildings, became a challenge to keep occupied and maintained.
The Marquette Tech District is returning these treasured structures to their prominence as the epicenter of modern economic expansion. Now the intersection is the hub for an emerging technology sector, a digitally connected downtown, and the region’s only Tier 1 hotel.
